Today I took Merlin in for x-rays. We arrived at the vet's half an hour early and the vet was at least half an hour late... so I took Merlin outside to have a look at the centre of Helsinki. Merlin acted like Miklos when he was Merlin's age: he tried to stop all the people in the streets to say Hello. heart He did get lots of success in his attempts as who can resist an adorable fluffy puppy with an Elisabethian collar and a big bandage around the front foot? He especially appealed to all the drunken men walking past us (and they do exist in great amounts in Helsinki on a warm and sunny summer day) and Merlin was very pleased to say Hello to them, too.

When he got tired I took him to the waiting room and we got to wait still about an hour there. Merlin fell asleep on the bench next to me so that his front feet and head hung down over the seat towards the floor. He looked hilarious and many employees at the vet station came to see him and got a big smile on their face.

When the vet finally was able to see Merlin he had just woken up. I explained the vet my "home diagnosis" confirmed by our local vet and he decided to take an x-ray with the bandage on. Merlin was a good boy and needed no anesthesia. He lied still under command "Down". The x-ray showed all the five layers of the bandage  :-D as well as a clearly broken bone in the toe on the left side of the paw approximately in the middle part of the paw. Other fractures or breakages could not be ruled out by this one shot so the vet decided to remove the bandage to get better x-rays.

Removing the bandage hurt Merlin a little and the two following x-rays (from above the paw and from the side) needed a little more assurance before he lied still for the procedure. The pictures showed there were no other breakages in the toes. That was good news. The vet attached the toes together with sticky tape and said that Merlin will probably limp for a week or so and then it should improve. Another x-ray must be taken in 2 weeks to see if the heeling is in good progress.
Then the vet decided to cut the nail in the broken toe a little shorter so that it won't hurt Merlin so much to walk. And - accidentally - he cut about half the nail off! Merlin started screaming of pain and bleeding. The vet was very sorry of course. So am I as Merlin had so far no bad experiences of people, grooming etc.

The final prognosis is good, Merlin's paw should become as good as new. For now he only gets limited exercise on leash but that I am sure we can handle.

P.S. What happened, you may wonder? When did he break the bone? I don't know. Two days ago he took a big leap while running and playing in the garden. He stumbled and fell when he landed, he yelped and lifted one front foot up - but he was very soon back to normal again. Later on I read on the internet that with broken toes it is typical that it is most painful 2-3 days after the incident. So it could have been that unfortunate leap-stumbling or it could have been something else.
